School Readiness

Many people assume that being “ready for school” means being able to read, write or count. While early learning skills are important, true school readiness is about much more than academics. Children need confidence, independence, listening skills and the ability to manage routines, transitions and social situations. Support focuses on developing these essential foundations alongside early literacy and maths, helping children feel secure, capable and ready to thrive when they start school. Below are the areas I can support your child as they prepare to begin their academic journey.

Emotional Readiness

Emotional readiness is a vital part of preparing children for school and underpins their ability to settle, learn and build positive relationships. Support focuses on helping children feel secure, confident and comfortable with new routines, encouraging independence, resilience and emotional regulation. By strengthening these foundations, children are better able to manage transitions, express their needs and approach school with confidence and curiosity.

02

Social Readiness

Social readiness helps children feel confident interacting with others in a school setting. Support focuses on developing communication, turn-taking, listening, cooperation and an understanding of social expectations. By strengthening these skills, children are better able to form friendships, work alongside peers and feel comfortable as part of a group, supporting a positive and settled start to school.

Communication Skills

Strong communication skills support children in expressing their needs, understanding others and engaging confidently in learning. Support focuses on developing listening, attention, vocabulary and clear expression through age-appropriate activities and guided interaction. Strengthening communication helps children participate in class, build relationships and feel understood in a school environment.

04

Learning Behaviours

Positive learning behaviours help children engage with learning confidently and independently. Support focuses on developing attention, perseverance, the ability to follow instructions, and confidence when attempting new or challenging tasks. By strengthening these behaviours, children are better prepared to participate in classroom learning, manage expectations and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

Numeracy Skills

Early numeracy skills go beyond counting and number recognition. Support focuses on developing number awareness, subitising, comparison, pattern recognition, measurement, and mathematical language through practical, hands-on activities. By building these foundations, children develop a deeper understanding of number and quantity, helping maths feel meaningful, accessible and confidence-building from the very start.

06

Early Literacy

Early literacy begins with strong Phase 1 phonics foundations before moving into Phase 2 and beyond. Support focuses on developing listening skills, sound awareness, rhyme, rhythm, and an enjoyment of language, alongside engagement with stories, imagination, and early mark-making. By securing these early building blocks, children are better prepared to approach reading and writing with confidence, understanding and enthusiasm.
