Preparing for the 7+ requires consistency, confidence and a clear understanding of what schools are looking for. Children benefit most when preparation is carefully structured, supportive and guided by an experienced education professional who understands both the assessment process and how children learn at this stage.
As a qualified KS1 teacher, I bring extensive experience from working in independent schools in London and internationally, as well as current experience supporting children through specialist tutoring agencies for 7+ preparation. This has given me a clear understanding of the expectations of independent schools, as well as how to support children to reach the required standard in a way that is developmentally appropriate, confidence-building and sustainable over time.
Interview Preparation
Interview preparation supports children in responding confidently to questions, explaining their thinking, and engaging positively with unfamiliar adults. Sessions focus on communication, self-confidence, and the clear expression of ideas in a calm, age-appropriate manner. This is a particularly important element of the 7+ process, helping children approach interviews with confidence and ease.
Maths
Maths support develops a secure understanding of key number concepts, calculation, reasoning and problem-solving. Sessions focus on applying mathematical knowledge confidently and explaining thinking clearly within structured tasks.
Comprehension
Comprehension support focuses on developing reading accuracy, understanding and the ability to discuss texts with confidence. Children are supported in retrieving information, making inferences and explaining ideas clearly, both orally and in writing. Sessions also help children develop thoughtful responses to unfamiliar texts, building confidence in how they approach and talk about reading in a 7+ assessment context.
Writing
Writing support focuses on developing sentence structure, spelling and punctuation, alongside confidence in written expression. Children are supported to organise their ideas clearly and write with increasing independence, accuracy and fluency. Creative writing and handwriting are both prioritised, ensuring children can express ideas imaginatively while writing clearly, legibly and with control.
Reasoning
Reasoning support helps children develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Sessions support verbal and non-verbal reasoning through structured practice, helping children approach unfamiliar questions calmly and systematically.
Practise Assessments
Practice assessments help children become familiar with the structure and expectations of assessments at 7+. These sessions focus on building confidence, stamina, and resilience, enabling children to understand how assessments work and to approach them calmly, with reduced anxiety and a clear sense of expectations. They also provide valuable insights that inform targeted tutoring sessions and enable parents to support their child effectively at home.
1 - Initial Assessment
.This would begin with a 90-minute assessment of the key areas covered in the 7+ process. This would be administered as a 7+ assessment, but I would support your child as needed to reduce stress and to help them understand how to access the assessment.
2 - Written Report
After the assessment is complete, I will prepare a report on the process and highlight strengths and areas for development.
To begin, I will share tips on how you can support your child as they prepare for their 7+ assessment, drawing on my experience with tutoring agencies that have supported entries to independent schools such as Westminster, Highgate, and JAGs.
Feedback will be provided immediately, and a report will be written within a week of the mock assessment.
3 - Tutoring if Needed
Some areas of development do benefit from consistent, structured support over time. Where this is agreed following discussion and shared observations, I am happy to offer weekly one-hour sessions or short intensive blocks during school holidays. This allows support to be carefully paced, responsive to your child’s needs and integrated smoothly alongside family routines.
